Land, Water, Food Systems

When the land is well, we are well.

Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council’s Land, Water, Food Systems team works alongside Member Nations to reclaim food sovereignty, restore ecological health, and strengthen the relationships between people, place, and food that have sustained these communities since time immemorial.

This is place-based, community-led work. It does not follow a template. It follows the land and the people who know it best.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

What guides this work

Support place-based capacity building opportunities rooted in each community’s relationship to their territory

Provide policy and project planning in areas related to land, water, and food systems

Facilitate Nation-to-Nation sharing and learning so knowledge and experience move across communities

Provide internship and mentoring opportunities flexible to each community or youth’s need

Distribute micro-grants and provide fund sourcing, grant writing, and research support

WHAT WE DO

Rooted in community. Responsive to need.

We work alongside Member Nations across a range of interconnected areas — because land, water, and food cannot be separated from one another, and neither can the work.

Supporting food security and food sovereignty planning means starting with what each Nation already knows about their land and their relationship to food — and building from there. Ecological restoration and food land conservation planning happen in partnership, not from the outside in. Policy development and research support ensure that the Nations have the tools to advocate for their land and water on their own terms.

For young people stepping into this work, NmTC offers internship and mentorship opportunities shaped around individual and community need. And through micro-grants, fund sourcing, and grant writing support, we help Nations access the resources that make community-led food and land initiatives possible.

Community Food Network

A space to come together, share, and grow.

The Community Food Network nurtures relationships between Member Nations and provides a collective space to share knowledge, develop ideas, work through challenges, celebrate, uplift one another, and grow.

The Network hosts regular meetings, workshops, and webinars, and develops learning opportunities in various formats — including toolkits, videos, and hands-on training. It is one of the most active and generative spaces in NmTC’s work, because it belongs to the Nations that show up for it.

Meet the Team

Meet the Land, Water, Food Systems Team

The Land, Water, Food Systems team brings together a dedicated group of people who care deeply about the land, the Nations, and the communities they serve. They show up not as experts with answers, but as partners willing to learn, listen, and get their hands in the soil alongside the people doing this work every day.
